Workability time, also known as pot life, refers to the time interval between mixing the tile adhesive and the point at which its consistency in the container gradually thickens to the extent that it can no longer be used. Under standard conditions—20°C and 50% relative humidity—the workability time of tile adhesive is typically 3 hours. In practice, the actual workability time depends on weather conditions; under hot, windy conditions, it generally shortens. For example, during summer, tile adhesive should be used up within 1 hour.
Five Key Time Points to Keep in Mind When Using Tile Adhesive
1. Workability time of tile adhesive
2. Drying time for tile adhesive
The open time, also known as the pot life, refers to the maximum time interval between applying the adhesive and achieving the specified tensile bond strength of ≥0.5 MPa upon bonding. It is roughly equivalent to the duration during which the adhesive mortar remains moist on the substrate without forming a skin. Under windy and hot conditions, the open time is significantly shortened; therefore, extra care must be taken when laying tiles in summer. If the adhesive forms a skin before bonding, the bond strength of the tile adhesive will be severely compromised.
3. Adjustability Time of Tile Adhesive
The time window during which tile placement can be adjusted without compromising bond strength. If this adjustment window is exceeded, the performance of the tile adhesive will be adversely affected.
4. Curing Time of Tile Adhesive
The setting time of tile adhesive refers to the period required for the adhesive to harden and set after application. Typically, the setting time is 24 hours. In low-temperature and high-humidity conditions, the hydration reaction of cement-based products slows down; moreover, tile adhesives often contain water-retaining agents that help lock in moisture, which further prolongs the setting time. Therefore, during winter construction, proper protection of the finished surface is essential.
5. Curing Time for Tile Adhesive
After tiling with tile adhesive, natural curing shall be carried out, during which watering and vibration are prohibited. Light loads, such as pedestrian traffic and grouting, may be applied after one day. However, for special areas such as cold storage rooms and water tanks, curing at ambient temperature for at least 14 days is required before use.
