How to Ensure Fire Safety in Exterior Wall Insulation
Every year in China, numerous fires are triggered by insulation materials, posing a serious threat to the safety of residents’ lives and property. Many insulation materials are highly flammable, and exterior wall insulation systems represent the weakest link in fire prevention. Fires involving exterior wall insulation typically occur during three key phases: first, during the storage and stacking of insulation materials at construction sites; second, during the application of insulation materials to the building façade; and third, after the insulation system has been installed and put into service. In the second and third phases, the absence of a fire-resistant protective layer on the surface of the insulation materials or between individual layers makes these periods critical for fire ignition.
Thermal insulation materials are mainly classified into three categories: first, thermoplastic insulation materials, with EPS thin-coat exterior wall external thermal insulation systems being the most widely used today, followed by XPS thin-coat exterior wall external thermal insulation systems, as well as mesh-reinforced cast-in-place and non-mesh cast-in-place systems, and composite insulation panel systems; second, thermosetting insulation materials, including on-site polyurethane foam systems and phenolic board products; third, inorganic insulation materials, such as rock wool insulation blankets for exterior walls. These materials exhibit varying degrees of fire performance.
It is essential to integrate the four major disciplines of architectural science, materials science, fire protection science, and environmental protection science. Any approach that deviates from these four disciplines will inevitably be one-sided and limited. To ensure effective fire safety in exterior wall insulation, the following key measures must be implemented:
1. Strictly comply with fire safety laws and regulations and fire safety systems.
2. Select an appropriate thermal insulation system and high-quality insulation materials; the currently emerging FS Integrated Insulation Board Worth considering.
3. Implement comprehensive preventive and control measures at each stage of the installation of the thermal insulation system.
4. After the insulation material is incorporated into an exterior wall insulation system, ensure proper system operation and implement fire prevention measures.
The widespread use of exterior wall insulation materials in buildings has made it imperative to address fire safety not only within the building but also on its exterior. Only by thoroughly learning from past fire incidents in China, identifying the root causes of fires involving exterior wall insulation materials, and implementing practical and effective safety measures can we lay a solid foundation for urban fire safety and ensure the safety of people’s lives and property.
