Recently, the public-service campaign “Free Formaldehyde Testing for Children’s Rooms Across China” was launched in Beijing, co-hosted by the China Public Relations Committee’s Research Center for Child Development, the China Association of Maternal and Child Health, and the China Building Decoration Association. Ten families were selected as the first batch to receive free formaldehyde-testing vouchers.
According to reports, this public welfare initiative is themed “Stay Away from Formaldehyde Hazards, Care for Children’s Health,” and aims to create a safe and healthy indoor environment. It employs an advanced, intelligent indoor environmental pollution detection system to measure pollutants such as formaldehyde and PM2.5 in indoor spaces. The program will be rolled out in 10 key cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, and Wuhan, with free testing offered to 1,000 households in each city.
In recent years, the incidence of leukemia has increasingly been observed in children. Many parents have subsequently reported that their homes underwent renovation within the past two years. While this is deeply distressing, it underscores the importance of taking renovation projects seriously: stringent quality control over building materials is essential, with a focus on selecting formaldehyde-free materials and furnishings. Additionally, ensuring adequate ventilation in newly renovated homes can help accelerate the dissipation of formaldehyde and other odors.
